Very interesting- thanks for this information! The painting must be from the Song era, I know they had pretty lively markets/ nightlife. That map is also very cool, particularly interesting how they have a Zoroastrian temple marked as a major place.

It's a shame more of this stuff has not been preserved. Most people in the West are totally unaware of any of this, and to be honest I wasn't either until I actually visited Xi'an. It seems like a great model for modern China trying to be more cosmopolitan.
